"Tolerance centre"
In the Tolerance Centre cultural and educational events take place and the heritage of both nations (Lithuanian and Jewish) are being presented. That is why the place has been given the name of the Tolerance Centre, as it fosters harmonious relations between communities and nations.
The building in the city centre date back to 1898, when it was built as a primary school, sponsored by the famous Chaim Frenkel from Ukmergė. Until World War II, boys from poor Jewish families studied there. After the war, the Soviets nationalized the school. Until 2009, the former Jewish boys’ school housed the Ukmergė Children’s Art School.
