The location of Deltuva (Vilkmergė) battle
In the village of Žalgiriai, near Deltuva cemetery, there is an obelisk marking the location of Deltuva battle. It is painted in the colours of the French and Russian flags. The inscription in stone declares: “On the 28th of June 1812, the corps of the French and Russian armies fought in this field”. Historically, Deltuva (Vilkmergė) battle is important because it marks one of the first defeats of Napoleon Bonaparte’s army. In addition, it is the only battle of Napoleon’s army that took place on the territory of Lithuania.
